Sonia Paço-Rocchia is a sound artist/composer/performer/improviser. She makes interactive sound installations
and composes for non-conventional instruments, such as cardboard boxes, slinky or bicycle, and she readily incorporates improvisation
and theatrical action into her pieces. She performs/improvises using a myriad of sound-makers, invented instruments, voice and/or
bassoon, along with live electronics using her own programming. She plays solo and in various ensembles including
London
Improvisers Orchestra.
Going Away, improvisation for solo bicycle & Max/MSP patch. Celebratory improvisation following a Skype group
improvisation during the Bicycles and the Arts event, 1st October 2010, at the Happy Dog Gallery, Chicago, USA. This episode began
with the serendipitous meeting in the living room of a spare pick-up and her up-turned punctured bicycle. It was a beginning that
later led to Sonia's first bicycle gig, at Luminaire, in London -- a Music Orbit and SPNM event.
"It just so happened that I repaired the tyre and rode my instrument to the gig. The bicycle has now been incorporated into my myriad
of sound-makers. It has reached the point where one forgets that it is a vehicle... It's the strange feeling that nowhere
feels quite like "home" that I used as base for this improvisation." Sonia Paço-Rocchia
Don't Forget, a bonus track, is about semi-improvised piece for bassoon and live electronics.
There is a very gradual scale between composition and improvisation and some of the motives came to... from the feeling of
nearly forgetting an precious memory.
